    Why Music?
    I. Music is a science
    II. Music is Mathematical
III. Music is a Foreign Language
    IV. Music is History
    V. Music is Physical Education
VI. Music is all things, but most of all, music is Art.
That is why we teach music:
Not because we expect you to major in music
Not because we expect you to play or sing all your life...
But so you will be human
    So you will recognize beauty
So you will be closer to an infinite beyond this world
So you will have something to cling to
So you will have more love, more compassion,
    More gentleness, more good---
    In short, more life.

*Studies have shown that students who participate in school music programs
consistently score higher on standardized tests.  In addition to this
benefit, students learn to work together cooperatively, they learn self
discipline from daily practice and they enjoy an increase in self-esteem from
    successfully participating in performance groups.
          General Music PK-8
All students have General Music as part of their academic course work at
Midland School. In grades K through 5 the students meet once a week for a
    forty-minute period.
In 6th, 7th, and 8th grade, the students will meet every day for one marking period this year.
Students in grades 6 & 7 will also have the opportunity to sign up for a chorus elective marking period 2.
    Performing Groups
Students in grades 4 through 8 may join the Midland School Chorus which meets after school.
Students in grades 4 through 8 may choose to learn an instrument and participate in one of the Midland School Bands.
Students who qualify in grades 6 through 8, may try out for the Talented and Gifted Vocal and Instrumental Ensembles.
Every other year the music department puts on a musical in the Spring.  Students in grades 6 through 8 are eligible to participate in the show.
